Editor's note: This very show was the most incredible concert ever staged by human beings (well, S.A. may not be fully human, but you get the picture).  311 rocked the Big Easy for nearly five hours that night to the delight of fans who had flocked in from all across Bayou Country and the entire Southeastern United States to witness the show of a lifetime.

Three Eleven's 2008 show was entertaining and you could tell they were putting in the effort, but it event was held at the New Orleans Arena, which has abysmal acoustics.  The 2004 show took place at Lakefront Arena, which has mediocre acoustics, but that was more than sufficient for 311 to put on a show that nobody who witnessed it will ever forget.

Purified sounds brush 'em on like paint
teenage dream to work with Ron Saint
home he ain't, we layin' tracks in Cali
the dude is excitable like a pep rally
since the days of the Eds in the westside
keeping it real, got nothing to hide
now we are a number, there is none greater
take me outside king, yo peace see ya later

Let's step out tonight, all night
the groove is soothin'
Let's step out tonight, all right
it's a fellow feelin' with my friends, once again

Grape vess soda pop, licorice stick
Aunt Mary's summertime backyard picnic
did you drink my beer Doug? yeah I did it
don't tell me to bring you beer
if you think I won't sip it
swinging on swinging on jungle gym sets
daddy talkin' bout the horses he bet
when I got home my friends phoned, hey Holmes

Let's step out tonight, all night
the groove is soothin'
Let's step out tonight, all right
it's a fellow feelin' with my friends, once again

Let's step out tonight, all night
the groove is soothin'
Let's step out tonight, all right
it's a fellow feelin' with my friends, once again

Thank Your Lucky Stars - 311

Three Eleven's recording of the song "Thank Your Lucky Stars", from the album "Don't Tread on Me"; complete with both song, video and also lyrics.

Complete with analysis from Fat Lester.

My interpretation of 311's "Thank Your Lucky Stars" is that this song is a classic, patriotic American anthem that celebrates the freedoms enjoyed by those lucky enough to reside within the United States of America's borders. The phrase "Thank Your Lucky Stars" first gained popularity from the
1943 Warner Brothers' film bearing the same title. The movie was, needless to say, extremely patriotic and nationalistic, which is par-for-the-course considering the movie was made as a World War II fundraiser.

The 311 anthem is to me clearly an almost Randian attempt at offering a different perspective on America than is commonly reflected in modern music and pop-culture.  Take for example the line "so many have died, so many out of their minds".  This seems to me to be a reference first to all the brave men and women who have fought and died winning and defending American freedom and sovereignty. The second part of the verse I believe to be a reference to all the "America haters" both within the United States and abroad.  These are the people who have nothing good to say about the USA no matter what the context or circumstances.  Given the meteoric amount of good America and Americans have done across the world over the past two-plus centuries, it would be difficult to rationally explain this viewpoint without attributing it to simple delusions and/or mental illness.

Looking into the picture a bit further, let's review the album's title.  "Don't Tread on Me" is a phrase that dates back to mid-1770's when it appeared on one of the early flags representing the United States of America.  The flag, known as "First Navy Jack", consisted of a rattlesnake superimposed across 13 alternating red and white stripes with the motto, "Don't Tread On Me" written across the bottom white stripe.

This to me is a clear indication when combined with lyrics from numerous songs on the album in addition to "Thank Your Lucky Stars" that 311 with this track is attempting to reach out to the confused among us that have been misled into believing that America is the cause of most of the world's problems as opposed to the solution.  This is an extremely gutsy move by a popular rock band with a cult-like following.

Totally consistent with 311's history of writing eclectic music and lyrics that come across as rebellious against herd-like political group-think, their Don't Tread on Me album and in particular the song for which the album was named along with Thank Your Lucky Stars go above and beyond an endorsement of independent thought.  These tracks embody the theme of the album, which I interpret to be a not-so-subtle warning to the American government as well as other governments across the world that their plot to enslave the world through the dumbing down of generations and populations coupled with the gradual stripping away at human and civil rights will most certainly encounter resistance along the way.

One last lyric to dissect, although it comes from the feature track "Don't Tread On Me".  Let us consider the following verse: "Before you point it at me, there is a possibility, you'd better turn that thing around.  Nothings come easily, so don't you tread on me, for I will knock you down."

I totally see that as being directed entirely at America's critics, hence the term "point it", an obvious reference to the finger-pointing that goes on in such places as the United Nations where international bureaucrats sit around with one hand pointing the middle-finger of blame at the U.S. for all the world's ills while they stick out the other hand palm facing upwards in hopes that some American taxpayer money will eventually be placed there.

The latter part of the verse is self explanatory.  It was 311's way of saying: "I'd advise you to cease and desist from your slanderous attacks against my great country or you'll end up like everyone else that has ever challenged us throughout history has ended up."  Take that as you wish.

311 - Thank Your Lucky Stars Lyrics
, Song and Video

I need a break
Something inside me said
From TV people counting the dead
A break from all the sadness
is what I need now, yeah
I remain at a loss for words
With apathy I sense in the herd
A colder man is senseless no questioning yet

And what's the point
Nothing so dull
Could ever on Earth be brightened in entirely
Just think about it
And what's the point
Nothing so sly
Could ever on Earth be enlightened entirely
Just think about it

Ask me I'm not blind
I can, I can read all the signs
So many have died
So many out of their minds
Thank your lucky stars
You got it good it's not hard
To be what you are
Thank your lucky stars

We're in a place
I thought we'd never get
People involved that fought or they
fled
Running around know how we're going to get out of it, woah
It's a mistake to be paranoid
A mental state that takes strength to avoid
All the hostility and fear should be challenged

Here's what's the point
Of living that way
So many close their minds to what others say
Which ever feeling you voice
And what's the point
We're gonna pay
So that I won't wait we will all have that day
So make your choice

Ask me I'm not blind
I can,
I can read all the signs
So many have died
So many out of their minds
Thank your lucky stars
You got it good it's not hard
To be what you are
Thank your lucky stars

Ask me I'm not blind
I can, I can read all the signs
So many have died
So many out of their minds
Thank your lucky stars
You got it good it's not hard
To be what you are
Thank your lucky stars
